FOR IMMEDITAE RELEASE

Opening Reception: Saturday, February 18, 6–8 pm

Friedrich Petzel Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by New York-based artist Charline von Heyl. The exhibition will be comprised of new paintings and a large installation of works on paper.

Charline von Heyl maintains a high level of analytic control in all her abstract paintings. She develops each canvas separately, following an individual visual logic that differentiates between line drawing, taping, surface structure and velocity. Most importantly, each canvas amplifies a particular dynamic, a result of conditions that von Heyl sets up in her studio. In some of her most recent paintings, she applies duct tape to the canvas before she begins working with paint and an oil stick. The rigidity of these resulting lines interrupts the visual flow that she has successfully explored. This methodology requires von Heyl to utilize a different approach to activate her latest paintings and give them a new sense of coherence. Essentially, her abstract paintings seem more like "pictures of abstractions" than expressive modes or emotional outpourings.

Also included in the exhibition are a series of black and white works on paper (photocopy, collage, and ink), which are equal in visual impact to her paintings and offer insight into their underlying structure.

Charline von Heyl was born in Mainz, Germany and now lives and works in New York. Her work has been exhibited both in the United States and abroad and most recently in solo shows at the Dallas Museum of Art and Vienna Secession.

This will be Charline von Heyl's fifth solo exhibition at Friedrich Petzel Gallery. The exhibition will open February 18, with a reception from 6 – 8 p.m. and will be on view through March 18. Friedrich Petzel Gallery is located at 537 West 22nd Street, New York, NY 10011. For further information, please contact the gallery at info@petzel.com, or call (212) 680-9467.
