Press Release

Petzel Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition by New York based artist Seth Price. This is his fifth solo exhibition with the gallery.

Although best known for his sculpture, video, and writing, Price has always made drawings and studies as a way to explore ideas developed in other mediums. Curator Achim Hochdörfer has now selected a group of these rarely seen art works for exhibition at Petzel’s new gallery uptown.

The show spans more than fifteen years, and encompasses media and materials that range from airbrush, charcoal, watercolor, and spray-paint, to polymer compounds, collage, and thermo-formed plastic. Among the almost 80 works on display are renderings of Depression-era landscapes produced as studies for Price’s calendar paintings; hand-painted plastic maquettes for his mylar sculptures; graffiti-marker on shrink-wrapped wooden palettes; cartoons later reproduced large-scale on vacuum-formed plastic sculptures; and research notes for an apocalyptic, Evangelical, sci-fi novel. Taken as a single installation, the diverse group of works suggests a key to some of the themes and provocations running throughout Price’s multifarious and elusive practice.

A catalogue published by Petzel Gallery, New York and Koenig Books, London will be available. Designed by Eric Wrenn, the catalogue features 120 images and is annotated by the artist.

Seth Price was born in 1973 in East Jerusalem, Palestine, where he lived until he was three. He received a BA from Brown University, where he studied literature and political science. Price began making art in 2000 and had his first solo exhibition in 2004; since then he has exhibited widely, at venues that include Documenta, the Biennale di Venezia, and the Whitney Biennial. His forthcoming novel, “Fuck Seth Price” (June 2015, Leopard Press) will be excerpted in the July issue of Harpers Magazine.

Petzel Gallery is located at 35 E 67th Street New York, NY 10065 and 456 West 18th Street New York, NY 10011. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM.
