Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Opening Reception: Saturday, February 28, 6-8 PM

Friedrich Petzel Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of its fifth solo exhibition of work by Los Angeles-based artist Jorge Pardo.

In the main gallery space, Jorge Pardo will construct a large-scale installation of a sunroom. This structure, fabricated from birch plywood and Plexiglas, is a continuation of Pardo's practice of creating habitable environments that set up a reflexive situation, such as Prototype, a cabin that was recently on exhibit at the Dia Center for the Arts, and his own residence, 4166 Sea View Lane. Also included in the exhibition are new paintings, doors, and lamps. Pardo appropriates such domestic architectural elements as seductive yet functional sculptures that destabilize the audience's expectations about art, especially as experienced in the traditional venue of the gallery.

Born in Havana, Cuba in 1963, Jorge Pardo has exhibited internationally at institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Kunsthalle Basel and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, and several site-specific installations including the recently completed delegates' dining room for the German Parliament in Berlin, and his own bar, The Mountain, in Los Angeles' Chinatown.

The exhibition will be on view from February 28 – March 27, 2004, with an opening reception to be held on Saturday, February 28, from 6 – 8 PM. Also this spring, there will be installation of new glass light sculptures and works on paper in the lobby of Lever House, the International Style landmark on Park Avenue in New York.
