MICHEL MAJERUS
"Leuchtland"
September 5 - October 19, 2002

Friedrich Petzel Galley is pleased to announce Leuchtland, a solo exhibition of new work by
Berlin-based artist Michel Majerus.

Majerus employs an artistic language that candidly quotes from art history and popular culture. He experiments with canonized styles, repackaging and juxtaposing familiar visual images, graphics and text with varied artistic techniques and genres—all on a colossal scale. Excerpts of Minimalism, Pop
and gestural abstraction abut lyrics from pop songs, brand logos, cartoons and magazine covers.
In Leuchtland, Majerus has transformed the architectural space of the gallery into a confrontational, dynamic maze of large paintings and banners within a framework of multi-colored beams. These constructions calibrate the disparate elements of the exhibition—such as the three triangular Frank Stella-derived paintings and oversized graphics from the video game "Space Invaders". Majerus acts like a visual DJ, and the result is a postmodern but personalized media.

This is Michel Majerus' first solo exhibition in the United States. The exhibition will open on September 5, with an opening reception from 6-8 pm, and will be on view through October 19, 2002. For more information, please contact the gallery at 212.680.9467 or info@petzel.com
